Pokemon Azure Horizons is one of those GBA ROM hacks that feels familiar but still surprises you. The first town has this weirdly cozy vibe, like they put extra effort into making the starter area feel alive. You get the usual choice of fire, water, or grass types, but the rival battles hit harder than I expected.
What stands out is how the world opens up. Instead of being funneled down one path, there are little side routes early on with trainers who actually have decent teams. Found a hidden cave behind some trees that wasn't marked on the map, which led to this whole optional area with rare Pokemon. Felt rewarding to explore off the beaten path.
The difficulty spikes in weird places though. Gym leaders sometimes have movesets you wouldn't expect, and wild Pokemon levels don't always match the area. Still, it's a solid take on the formula if you're looking for something fresh but still feels like Pokemon. The new region has its own charm.
