Pokemon Brown is a GBA rom hack that sticks close to the classic formula but with a few twists. You start in Johto, but the map feels slightly rearranged, like someone shuffled the towns just enough to keep you on your toes.
The early game is familiar - catching the usual low-level Pokemon, grinding against trainers with predictable teams. But then you run into wild encounters or trainer battles that throw curveballs, like a level 12 Pidgeotto when you're still rocking level 5 starters. It keeps the grind from feeling too mindless.
Some routes are blocked off until later, which gives that old-school "come back when you have the right HM" vibe. The pacing is slower than modern Pokemon games, but if you're into that methodical, explore-every-corner style, Pokemon Brown does it well.
It's not a complete overhaul, just a remixed version of what you already know. The charm is in those small surprises that make you double-check your team before walking into tall grass.
