Pokémon Crono (Beta 2) is one of those fan-made hacks that actually makes you forget you're not playing an official release. It starts off familiar—same GBA charm, same turn-based battles—but then you notice little things: weird new Pokémon in the tall grass, a town layout that doesn’t match any region you’ve seen, and trainers who actually put up a fight. The sprites are redrawn just enough to feel fresh without losing that nostalgic punch.
I got stuck for way too long in the first forest because some of the wild encounters are brutal early on. But that’s part of the fun—it doesn’t hold your hand. There are nods to the classics, sure, but also these weird, ambitious twists, like a post-game area that’s basically a love letter to ROM-hacking itself. If you’ve burned through too many vanilla Pokémon playthroughs, this one’s worth the hassle of patching the ROM.
