Pokemon Cyan is a fan-made GBA rom that feels like stumbling onto a lost official game. The first town has that familiar warm glow, but something's off in a good way - new sprites, weirdly named NPCs, and grass patches hiding creatures you don't recognize.
I got stuck early when a trainer's oddball team wrecked my usual starter strategy. Had to actually grind for once instead of breezing through. The region map twists in unexpected ways too, with routes looping back in ways that make you rethink progression.
Some of the custom sprites look rough up close, but the new monster designs have charm. Found this electric-type that's just a floating lightbulb with eyes. It's terrible in battle but I kept it on my team anyway.
Pokemon Cyan doesn't reinvent anything, but it's got enough surprises to feel fresh if you've played the classics to death.
