Game Overview
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team is one of those weird, charming spin-offs where you wake up as a Pokémon—no trainer, just you, a little Squirtle or whatever, trying to figure out why you turned into a cartoon monster. The personality quiz at the start is oddly intense; I remember sweating over whether "brave" or "curious" fit me better (turns out I’m a Cyndaquil, apparently).
Most of the game is crawling through randomly generated dungeons, rescuing lost Pokémon, and hoarding berries like a squirrel. The turn-based movement takes some getting used to—enemies only move when you do—but it makes you think before rushing into fights. And the story? Way darker than you’d expect from a game where your team’s base is literally a mailbox.
It’s janky in that early DS era way, but there’s something cozy about recruiting a bunch of misfit Pokémon and watching them bumble through dungeons together.
