You pick your partner (I went with a Chimchar because fire types never let me down), and suddenly you’re running a rescue team, diving into randomly generated dungeons where every step counts.
The turn-based battles feel tense—you can’t just button-mash your way through. One wrong move against a pack of wild Geodudes, and you’re limping back to base. But recruiting defeated Pokémon to join your squad? That never gets old. Found a Shinx early on who carried me through half the game.
What surprised me was the story. It starts simple—helping lost Pokémon, taking odd jobs—but then it sneaks in these emotional gut-punches. The pixel art and music do a lot of heavy lifting too, especially in those quiet moments between dungeons.
Just don’t expect it to hold your hand. You’ll get wrecked a few times before figuring out which items are worth hoarding and which Pokémon synergize well. But that’s part of the fun.
