Pokemon Ranger: Guardian Signs came out on the Nintendo DS in 2010, developed by Creatures and published by Nintendo. It was part of that era where the DS library was full of experimental spin-offs, and this one took the Pokemon formula in a completely different direction, focusing on action and temporary partnerships instead of turn-based battles and permanent captures.

You play as a Ranger whose main job is to protect the environment and befriend wild Pokemon by capturing them with your Capture Styler. You do this by drawing loops around them on the touch screen with the stylus; some Pokemon move quickly or attack, forcing you to dodge and time your loops carefully. As you progress, you can call upon previously captured Pokemon to use their abilities, like cutting down trees or surfing across water, which opens up new areas to explore. The pacing is steady, with a mix of exploration, light puzzle solving, and boss encounters, and the difficulty comes more from execution than complex strategy. It feels active and immediate, like you're really working with the Pokemon instead of just commanding them.
