Pokemon Vega is one of those fan-made rom hacks that actually feels like a proper game. The new region has this weird mix of familiar routes and completely unexpected areas, like stumbling into a desert town early on when you're still using level 10 pokemon.
What stands out are the custom pokemon designs. Some look like rejected beta designs from the official games, others are surprisingly polished. There's this one electric-type that's just a floating plug with eyes, which is either genius or ridiculous, I can't decide.
The difficulty spikes hard around the third gym. You'll be grinding against wild pokemon for way longer than usual, which gets old fast. But when you finally beat that gym leader, it feels earned in a way modern pokemon games don't.
Pokemon Vega isn't perfect, but it's got more personality than most official releases.
