The core loop involves exploring routes and cities, capturing Pokemon in tall grass using a variety of Pokeballs, and battling other trainers to grow your team stronger. Two key mechanics are the fully animated Pokemon sprites during battles, which added a lot of personality, and the seasonal changes that alter the landscape and available paths in certain areas. The pacing is brisk, constantly pushing you to new towns, and the difficulty feels fair, with a few gym leaders providing a genuine challenge. It feels like starting the series over again with a sense of discovery and a slightly more complex world to figure out.
