Pompeii was released for the Atari 2600 in 1983 by developer and publisher Telesys. It arrived late in the console's life, a time when many games were experimenting with more complex themes and mechanics, even within the system's graphical limitations. The game takes the historical eruption of Mount Vesuvius and turns it into a frantic race for survival.

You control a small, blocky figure representing a citizen of Pompeii, and your goal is simply to escape the city before it is destroyed. You move from screen to screen, each one a single city block, while avoiding falling fireballs and crumbling buildings. The screen flashes and shakes to simulate the chaos of the eruption, and the constant timer adds a layer of urgency. It feels like a desperate, claustrophobic dash against an unstoppable force.
