Populous II: Trials of the Olympian Gods came out for the Super Nintendo in 1993, developed by Bullfrog Productions. It was one of those games that felt different from the platformers and RPGs crowding the shelves at the time, offering a kind of strategic, top-down control that wasn't common on the system.
You play as a god, directing a tribe of followers across a series of isometric maps. Your main goal is to outpopulate and overpower the rival god on each level by converting their followers and destroying their settlements. You don't control units directly; instead, you sculpt the terrain, raise or lower land to guide your people, and cast spells like earthquakes or tornadoes to disrupt your opponent. The pace is deliberate, almost meditative at times, but it can turn frantic when disasters strike or belief in you wanes. It feels like conducting a slow, volatile symphony where every decision ripples across the world.
