Game Overview

Populous on the Game Boy came out in 1991, a portable take on Bullfrog's god game. It was a strange and ambitious thing to see on that little green screen, a complex strategy title in an era dominated by simpler platformers and puzzle games.

You play as a deity guiding a tribe of followers. Your main goal is to outnumber and destroy the opposing tribe by raising and lowering land to create livable space, directing your people to build homes, and using divine powers like earthquakes or floods to disrupt your rival. The game progresses screen by screen across a world map, each level a self-contained puzzle of terrain manipulation and population management. It moves slowly, demanding patience as you carefully sculpt each hill and valley. The difficulty is considerable, a constant battle against the clock and an ever growing enemy presence. It feels like conducting a very meticulous, sometimes frustrating, symphony of creation and destruction.
