Populous came out on the Sega Genesis in 1990, developed by Bullfrog Productions. It was one of those games that felt different from everything else on the system at the time, a strategy title that asked you to think like a god rather than a hero or a soldier.

You control a deity guiding a tribe of followers across an isometric world. Your main goal is to outgrow and overpower a rival god's population by raising and flattening land, summoning natural disasters, and directing your people to build new settlements. The game plays out screen by screen, with each level presenting a new landscape to manipulate. Pacing is deliberate; you spend a lot of time carefully shaping the terrain to make it habitable before unleashing earthquakes or tornadoes on enemy villages. It feels tense and absorbing, a constant balance between creation and destruction.
