Game Overview

I first played Populous on the Sega Genesis back in 1991, a game developed by Bullfrog Productions. It was a different kind of experience on a console mostly known for action and platformers, offering a slow, thoughtful kind of power trip that felt entirely new at the time.

You control a god, viewed from above, guiding a tribe of followers across a tiled landscape. Your main goal is to grow your population and wipe out the rival god's believers. You raise and lower land to create livable space for your people, cast spells like earthquakes and volcanoes to directly damage enemy settlements, and carefully manage your faith power to keep your divine abilities fueled. The pacing is deliberate, almost meditative at first, but it builds into a tense battle of territorial control. It feels like conducting a slow-motion war from the clouds.
