Populous on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System came out in 1991, developed by Bullfrog Productions. It was one of those early SNES titles that felt different from the platformers and action games that dominated the system at the time, offering a slower, more thoughtful kind of challenge.

You play as a deity guiding a tribe of followers, shaping the landscape by raising and lowering land to create habitable space for them to build villages. Your main goal is to outgrow an opposing god's population by strategically manipulating the terrain and unleashing disasters like earthquakes or floods on enemy settlements. The game progresses screen by screen across an isometric world, with each level presenting a new map to conquer. It requires patience and a tactical eye, as misjudging your power usage can leave you vulnerable. There's a distinct satisfaction in patiently molding a world and then calmly watching your enemy's followers get swept away.
