Game Overview

Pro Pool came out for the Game Boy Color in 2000, published by Atlus. It was one of the few dedicated pool games on the system, arriving late in the handheld's life when players were used to squeezing depth out of small cartridges. You don't get fancy licenses or real player names, just straightforward pocket billiards designed for quick sessions.

You control the cue stick, carefully positioning it and adjusting the power of your shot before taking aim. The main goal is simply to clear the table, either in standard 8-ball or 9-ball matches against CPU opponents. Key mechanics include a precise aiming guide that shows the path of the cue ball, English spin to control where it rolls after contact, and judging how hard to strike to avoid scratching. Matches move at a deliberate pace, demanding patience; the physics are surprisingly decent for the hardware, though later opponents can feel brutally accurate. It feels satisfying to pull off a tricky combination or nudge a ball just enough to drop it in the corner pocket.
