Puzzle Bobble, known as Bust-A-Move in North America, came out in arcades in 1994 from Taito. It was a time when puzzle games were thriving alongside fighting games and racers, offering something bright and approachable that didn't demand quick reflexes, just a steady aim and a sharp eye.
You control a small dragon at the bottom of the screen, aiming a cannon that fires colored bubbles upward. Your goal is to clear the entire screen of bubbles by matching three or more of the same color. The key mechanics involve careful aiming to create clusters, using ricochets to hit tricky spots, and causing chain reactions that drop large sections at once. The pace starts relaxed but tightens as the ceiling of bubbles gradually descends, raising the tension with each new shot. It feels satisfying to watch a well-planned bubble pop a huge chunk of the screen and reset your breathing room.
