Quiz King of Fighters came out in arcades in 1995, developed by SNK. It was a strange but memorable spin-off during the mid-90s fighting game boom, trading punches for puzzles and combos for quizzes. Signature mechanics include using items to skip tough questions or hinder your rival, and a risk-reward system where wagering more points on an answer leads to greater damage. The pacing is quick, the difficulty is unforgiving if your knowledge is weak, and it feels equal parts ridiculous and tense to see your favorite martial artist lose a match because they didn't know the capital of Peru.
