Game Overview
R-Type DX is one of those rare Game Boy Color gems that somehow squeezes a full arcade shooter experience into a tiny cartridge. You're thrown right into the cockpit of the R-9 fighter, dodging waves of Bydo Empire ships that look like someone crossed a squid with a nightmare. The first level alone has these creepy organic-looking walls that pulse like they're alive—classic R-Type weirdness.
What's cool is this cart packs both R-Type and R-Type II, plus the DX version that mashes them together. The force pod (that little orb that orbits your ship) is still the MVP—half your strategy is figuring out when to latch it to your front or back. Pro tip: don't get cocky after the first few easy waves. The difficulty spikes hard around stage 3, just like the arcade original.
For a Game Boy port, the colors pop nicely, and the chunky pixels actually work in its favor when everything's exploding. Just expect to die. A lot. That's part of the charm.
