Rampart came out for the Sega Genesis in 1991, developed by Atari Games. It was a strange mix of strategy and shooting that stood out among the platformers and beat 'em ups of the time. You didn't control a character so much as manage a territory, which felt different from almost anything else on the system.

You control a fleet of castles, placing Tetris-like wall pieces to enclose areas before a timer runs out. Once the walls are set, cannons automatically fire at enemy ships, but you can also manually aim and shoot them yourself. After each round, you repair your damaged walls with new blocks, racing to claim enough space to place more cannons before the next assault. The game moves quickly, and a single breach can spiral into defeat. It feels tense and satisfying when your defenses hold.
