Rats! came out for the Game Boy Color in 2000, developed by Light and Shadow and published by Telegames. It was part of that late era for the handheld, when developers were still squeezing interesting ideas out of the hardware before the Advance arrived. You play as an old farmer whose quiet life is upended when a gang of rats kidnaps his wife.
You control the farmer through side scrolling levels, punching rodent enemies and dodging their projectiles. The main goal is to fight through each stage to rescue your wife, collecting food items to restore health along the way. The game uses a lives system and screen by screen progression, with a focus on straightforward combat and platforming. The pacing is quick, and the difficulty can be unforgiving with limited continues. It feels like a compact, no frills brawler that demands precision.
