Game Overview

Rival Turf is a 1992 beat 'em up for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, developed and published by Jaleco. It arrived early in the SNES library, offering the kind of straightforward street brawling that was common in arcades and on earlier consoles. You pick one of two brothers, Jack or Oozie, and set off to rescue Jack's girlfriend from a local gang.

You control your character through side-scrolling urban environments, moving from left to right and using basic punches, kicks, and throws to defeat endless thugs. The main objective is to clear each screen of enemies to progress, culminating in a boss fight at the end of every stage. A signature mechanic is the two-player co-op mode, which allows a friend to join in but often leads to friendly fire as your characters can hit each other. You can also perform a limited number of special attacks by pressing both attack buttons, which clears the immediate area at the cost of some health. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty can feel cheap due to aggressive enemy AI and limited moves. It feels like a scrappy, unpolished brawl that relies more on persistence than finesse.
