Riviera: The Promised Land came out on Game Boy Advance in 2004, developed by Sting. It was part of that wave of late-era GBA RPGs that felt ambitious, trying to do more with the hardware before everyone moved on to the DS. You play as Ein, one of the divine guardians known as the Grim Angels, sent to a doomed floating continent to prevent a cataclysm. The story is straightforward at first, but the characters and their interactions give it weight.

You control Ein and a small party, navigating the world screen by screen. Exploration is simple but deliberate; you tap through static scenes looking for items and secrets. Combat uses a turn-based system where you manage a limited stock of powerful, breakable weapons. Choosing when to use a strong attack and lose the item, or to conserve it with weaker strikes, is the core tension. Your choices in dialogue and which party members you favor also influence events and endings. The pacing is methodical, almost slow, and some battles can feel punishing if you mismanage your resources. It feels like a careful, thoughtful puzzle dressed up as an RPG.
