Game Overview

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves on the Game Boy came out in 1991, developed by Sculptured Software and published by Virgin Games. It was one of many licensed titles from that era, trying to capture the feel of the film on a handheld screen. The game doesn't try to reinvent anything, but it fits right in with the platform's library of action adventures.

You control Robin Hood through a series of side scrolling levels, moving screen by screen to rescue prisoners and gather gold. You start with nothing, finding a sword and bow early on to fight guards and later magical enemies. The bow is especially useful for hitting distant targets before they spot you. The levels are fairly linear but require some backtracking once you get new tools, like a rope for climbing. It's not an easy game; enemies respawn, and health is scarce. Playing it feels like a cautious, methodical crawl through enemy territory where every arrow counts.
