Romancing SaGa 2 is one of those weird, ambitious SNES RPGs that never made it outside Japan back in the day—which is a shame, because it’s got this fascinating generational twist. You start as Emperor Leon, trying to keep your kingdom together while hunting down seven demons. Then, surprise—he dies (early, too), and suddenly you’re playing as his kid. And then their kid. And so on.
Every time your ruler kicks the bucket, you pick a successor from a handful of options—sometimes a warrior, sometimes a mage, sometimes some rando you recruited earlier. Your choices shape the dynasty, and losing a favorite character hurts because they’re gone for good. Combat’s all about mastering techniques mid-battle and praying your healer doesn’t run out of life points (yes, permadeath is lurking).
The 2017 remaster smoothed out the rough edges with better translations, prettier sprites, and a brutal new dungeon if you’re into that. It’s still weird, still punishing, but in a way that makes you want to try one more generation.
