Romancing SaGa 3 is one of those SNES RPGs that feels massive even now. The whole thing starts with this eerie premise—every 300 years, the Death Eclipse wipes out all newborns, except one "chosen" kid. Last time, that kid became a demon king. The time before that, a holy king. Now it’s happening again, and you pick one of eight characters to see how their story unfolds.
What’s cool is that each character’s opening is totally different. If you play as Monica, you’re a princess racing to stop a rebellion, losing your horse along the way (classic). Pick Thomas, and you’re a merchant getting tangled in way more than you bargained for. They all eventually cross paths, but those first few hours feel fresh each time.
Combat’s turn-based but with a twist—your skills level up the more you use them, so swinging that rusty sword actually pays off later. And sometimes, battles shift to full-on army clashes where you’re positioning troops like a general. It’s got that old-school charm where everything’s a little cryptic, but stumbling through it is half the fun.
Honestly, it’s wild how much personality they packed into a 16-bit game.
