Play RPG Maker Online

You drag and drop tiny pixel towns, name goofy NPCs like "Bob the Unwise," and cobble together janky little stories—half-baked dungeons, stolen lunch money bosses, all held together by pure imagination.

Game Overview

I picked up RPG Maker for the Game Boy Color back when it came out, a release that didn't get much fanfare. It was developed by Kuusou Kagaku and published by Enterbrain, and it felt like a quiet experiment for the handheld, a tool more than a traditional game. In an era where most Game Boy titles were self-contained adventures, this one handed you the keys and said, "Build your own."

You control a custom hero through worlds you design yourself, placing towns, forests, and caves tile by tile. The main goal is to create a full RPG, from writing dialogue to mapping out dungeons and scripting enemy encounters. Signature mechanics include screen-by-screen exploration, turn-based combat with swords and magic, and puzzle-filled dungeons where you hunt for keys or hidden switches. The pacing is entirely up to you; it can be slow and thoughtful or rushed and chaotic. It feels like building a world with your own hands, then stepping into it to see how it holds together.
