Game Overview

Samurai Shodown on the Game Boy came out in 1994, developed by Takara. It was one of those portable attempts to bring a fighting game to a system not really built for it, but it tried something different. Instead of just being a straight port, it went for an action-adventure style, which was pretty common for adapting arcade games to handhelds back then.

You control one of several fighters from the series, moving screen by screen through side-scrolling stages. Your main goal is to defeat enemies and bosses across various levels, using your sword and occasional projectiles like a bow. Combat relies on timing your slashes and blocks; landing a clean hit or counterattack feels precise despite the small buttons. The pacing is deliberate, and enemies can take a good number of hits, making it tougher than it looks. It’s a methodical, sometimes repetitive experience that rewards patience over flash.
