Samurai Shodown (or Samurai Spirits, if you're feeling nostalgic for the original Japanese title) is one of those arcade fighters that just feels different. Instead of endless combos, fights are tense, almost methodical—one good slash with your katana can turn the tide instantly. The characters are all over-the-top stereotypes (a drunken master, a shrine maiden with a giant mallet), but that’s part of the charm.

What really stands out is how weighty the weapons feel. Landing a heavy strike has this satisfying crunch, and messing up leaves you wide open. The pixel art still holds up too—blood sprays in dramatic arcs, and the backgrounds are packed with little details like cherry blossoms drifting across the screen. Just don’t get too distracted, or Haohmaru will cleave you in half.

It’s brutal, a bit silly, and way more strategic than most fighters from its era. If you’ve only played modern fighting games, the pacing might throw you off at first. But once you adjust, there’s nothing quite like the tension of a close match where both players are one hit away from losing.
