Konami released Contra Spirits for the Game Boy in 1994, a time when handheld games often felt like smaller, compromised versions of their console counterparts. This one stood out for trying to capture the run and gun action of the series on a system with limited hardware, and it managed to deliver a solid experience without the two player co-op the franchise was known for.
You control a lone soldier moving through side scrolling stages, shooting aliens and robotic enemies while dodging their fire. The main goal is to survive each stage and defeat the boss waiting at the end. You collect power-up icons that change your weapon, like the Spread Shot or Laser, and you lose your current weapon if you get hit. The game is fast and difficult, demanding quick reflexes and memorization of enemy patterns. It feels tense and satisfying to finally clear a screen that killed you repeatedly moments before.
