Game Overview

Contra 4 on the DS feels like a punch straight from the '90s—in the best way possible. It picks up right after Contra III, throwing you back into the chaos as Billy, Lance, and two new trigger-happy soldiers against another alien invasion. The action’s as relentless as ever, but now you’ve got the DS’s dual screens giving you way more room to dodge bullets (or fail spectacularly trying).

What’s cool is the weapon system—you can carry two guns at once and swap between them mid-fight. That flamethrower seemed useless until I realized it melts bosses faster than expected. And yeah, the levels are classic Contra: jungles, waterfalls, and that one base level where everything explodes in pseudo-3D. Local co-op’s a blast too, assuming your friend doesn’t steal all the spread shots.

Oh, and the cartridge’s packed with extras—the original NES Contra and Super C, plus a whole history of the series. It’s basically a love letter to fans who grew up with this stuff. Just don’t blame me when you rage-quit at the third level.
