Game Overview

Okay, so Samurai Shodown 4 is one of those Neo Geo fighters where you pick a swordsman (or woman—there’s a pirate lady who fights with a giant anchor, which rules) and just go at it. No complicated combos to memorize, no 50-hit air juggles—just clean, weighty sword strikes where one good slash can turn the tide. The characters all feel distinct, too. You’ve got your classic ronin types, but also weirdos like a dude who fights with a flaming skeleton arm. Weird in the best way.

What really stands out is the pacing. Matches are slower than your average fighter, so every move matters. Misjudge a swing, and you’re eating a counterhit that’ll chunk half your health. The tension when both players are down to a sliver of life is unreal—one wrong step and it’s over. Also, the blood effects are hilariously over-the-top for a pixel art game. Lose badly, and your fighter gets bisected like a melon.

It’s got that classic Neo Geo charm—big sprites, crunchy sound effects, and an announcer who yells "SLASH!" like he’s personally invested in your fight. If you’re into old-school fighters with personality, this one’s a blast.
