Game Overview

Ever played one of those NES games that makes you go, "Wait, how did they fit this much strategy into a cartridge?" That’s Shancara for you—a weird little Japan-only gem where you scheme your way to ruling a planet. At first glance, it looks like a basic turn-based strategy thing, but five minutes in, you realize your advisors might be lying to you, your allies are probably spies, and half your army just defected because you forgot to bribe someone.

It’s got that classic 8-bit aesthetic, but don’t let the pixels fool you—this thing plays like Dune crossed with a back-alley poker game. You’ll juggle diplomacy, sabotage, and outright wars, all while trying not to get poisoned by your own cabinet. The menus are clunky (it’s the NES, after all), but once you get the hang of it, the paranoia sets in beautifully. Found myself reloading saves more than once because, turns out, trusting the guy with the suspiciously friendly smile was a terrible idea.

If you’re into old-school strategy with more twists than a telenovela, this one’s worth digging up. Just maybe keep a notepad handy for all the betrayals.
