Shadow Warriors (or Ninja Gaiden Shadow, depending on where you got it) is the Game Boy’s lone take on the series—and honestly, it’s a solid little port. You’re still playing as Ryu Hayabusa, slashing through enemies with that satisfying ninja speed, but everything’s stripped down to fit the handheld. The sprites are tiny but surprisingly detailed, and the controls feel tight once you adjust to the smaller buttons.
Story’s basic—evil emperor wants to wreck the world, you’ve got to stop him—but the real draw is how they adapted Ninja Gaiden’s platforming and combat for the Game Boy. Some jumps feel brutal with the limited screen space, and you’ll definitely curse a few cheap hits, but nailing a perfect run through a stage feels great. The music’s got that classic chiptune energy too, especially the boss themes.
It’s not as deep as the NES games, but for a pocket-sized ninja fix, it holds up better than you’d expect.
