Shadow Warriors, known as Ninja Gaiden outside Japan, came out in 1988 from Tecmo and is one of those arcade games you can now play through MAME. You control a ninja named Ryu Hayabusa, moving screen by screen through urban and industrial settings, slashing enemies with your sword and using limited ninja arts like fire wheels or temporary invincibility. The main goal is straightforward: fight to the end of each stage, defeat the boss, and move on. Key mechanics include wall jumping to access higher platforms, and a life bar that encourages careful play instead of just rushing in. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty is unforgiving, with enemies swarming from all sides and projectiles coming from off-screen. It feels tense and demanding, where every mistake costs you.
