Shadow Warriors came out in 1990 as an arcade game from Tecmo, right when side-scrolling action was everywhere. It didn't try to reinvent the wheel, but it had a certain sharpness to it, the kind of thing you'd drop a few quarters into between rounds of more famous titles.
You control a ninja moving screen by screen through enemy-filled levels, using a sword and occasional projectile weapons like shurikens. Your main goal is straightforward: fight through each stage, defeat the boss, and rescue hostages. The combat relies on quick slashes and jumps, with enemies often swarming from both sides. It's fast and fairly difficult, demanding good timing to avoid taking cheap hits. Playing it feels like a tense, focused scramble where every cleared screen brings a small wave of relief.
