Shantae came out for the Game Boy Color in 2002, developed by WayForward Technologies. It arrived late in the handheld's life, when many players had already moved on to brighter screens, but it made the most of the hardware with detailed sprites and fluid animation. The game stood out for its ambition on a system not always known for deep action-adventures.
You control Shantae, a half-genie who uses her hair as a whip to attack enemies. Her main goal is to stop the pirate Risky Boots, who has stolen a steam engine and threatens to devastate Shantae's seaside home. Exploration happens screen by screen, with progress often gated by abilities gained in dungeons. A key mechanic is dancing to transform into different animals; a monkey climbs walls, an elephant smashes obstacles, and other forms open up new routes. The pacing is deliberate, with some backtracking, and the difficulty can spike during boss fights or precise platforming sections. It feels satisfying to slowly master each transformation and uncover another piece of the map.
