Game Overview

I remember picking up Shaq-Fu for the Amiga back in 1994, a game published by Electronic Arts and developed by a few studios, including Black Pearl Software. It was a time when celebrity tie-ins were becoming more common, and this one tried to blend basketball star Shaquille O'Neal with a martial arts adventure. The Amiga had its share of unique titles, and this one certainly stood out, though not always for the reasons you might hope.

You control Shaq, moving through side-scrolling environments, fighting a series of opponents in one-on-one combat. The main goal is to rescue a boy named Nezu from an evil sorcerer, battling through different stages and enemies. The game uses rotoscoped animation, which gives the characters a fluid, realistic look, and you execute punches, kicks, and special moves with combinations of joystick movements and button presses. The pacing can feel slow at times, and the difficulty is notoriously unforgiving, with stiff controls that make precise actions a challenge. Playing it feels like wrestling with the mechanics as much as the enemies on screen.
