Game Overview

Shaq Fu came out in 1994 for the Sega Genesis, developed by Delphine Software. It was one of those oddball titles that showed up during the 16-bit era, a time when licensed games could be anything from straightforward platformers to whatever this was. The premise alone made it stand out, even if not always for the right reasons.

You control Shaquille O'Neal, moving through side-scrolling environments, fighting a series of strange enemies using a mix of martial arts and, occasionally, throwing basketballs. The main goal is to rescue a child from an alternate dimension by defeating opponents in one-on-one combat across different stages. The fighting feels stiff and unresponsive, with awkward hit detection and limited moves. Matches play out screen by screen, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly. Playing it feels like wrestling with the controller while someone explains a very confusing dream.
