You pick a messed-up high schooler, then bribe demons with pocket change while dodging your algebra teacher-turned-nightmare in hallways that feel way too small. The SNES version’s pixelated gloom makes every corner creepier.

Game Overview

Shin Megami Tensei if... takes the usual demon-summoning chaos of the series and traps it inside a creepy high school—which honestly makes everything way more personal. You start as a student (pick from three characters, each with their own weird baggage) when some power-tripping classmate rips open portals to literal hell. Suddenly, your algebra teacher might be a demon, and the gym is full of things that want to eat you.

The vibe is somewhere between survival horror and classic SMT negotiation—you’ll still recruit demons by bribing them with macca or compliments, but the halls feel claustrophobic, like a bad dream where you can’t leave. The PS1 remake cleaned up the graphics, but the SNES version has that grimy charm where every shadow could hide something awful. If you’ve played mainline SMT, this one’s weirder, smaller, and way more about petty school drama gone apocalyptic.

Also, protip: save often. Lockers are not your friends.
