Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey came out on the Nintendo DS in 2009, developed by Atlus. It was a time when the DS library was full of experimental titles, and this one fit right in with its serious tone and first-person perspective, a stark contrast to the more common casual or family-friendly games on the platform.
You control a soldier sent into a growing dimensional rift, exploring its hostile, maze-like sectors one grid square at a time. Your main goal is to find a way to stop the expansion of this anomaly, called the Schwarzwelt, before it consumes the world. You'll negotiate with demons you encounter, trying to persuade them to join your party; if that fails, you fight. A key mechanic is demon fusion, where you combine your collected monsters to create new, more powerful allies. The pacing is deliberate, the difficulty is significant, and every step deeper into the labyrinth feels tense and uncertain. Playing it feels like being part of a desperate, slowly unfolding science fiction horror story where your only real friends are the demons you manage to befriend.
