Game Overview

Shin Shougi Club turns shogi—Japan’s answer to chess—into something way more lively than you’d expect from an SNES game. The board looks crisp, the pieces have this cute anime flair, and the AI doesn’t mess around. I lost my first three matches before realizing I should probably stop treating it like regular chess.

What’s cool is how it eases you in. There’s a tutorial that actually explains things (rare for a ‘90s game), and the difficulty ramps up nicely. Two-player mode’s where it really shines, though—nothing beats the smug satisfaction of dropping a promoted gold general on your friend’s king. Even if you’ve never played shogi before, the mechanics click faster than you’d think. Just don’t expect mercy from the CPU on higher settings.
