Shodai Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun—or River City Ransom 2, if you're rocking the English patch—is basically the SNES sequel we never got in the West. It takes everything ridiculous about the original—the suplexes, the delinquents shouting nonsense, the way you can just pick up a trash can and hurl it at someone's face—and makes it bigger, smoother, and somehow even more chaotic.

You’re still beating up entire schools’ worth of goons, but now the sprites are chunkier, the moves feel weightier, and the whole thing just oozes that early '90s SNES charm. I love how the dialogue’s still absurd (even translated), and there’s something deeply satisfying about saving up for a new special move, then immediately testing it out on some poor sap in a tracksuit.

It’s a shame this never left Japan originally, but the fan translation means you can finally experience it without guessing your way through menus. Grab a buddy if you can—throwing someone into a crowd of enemies never gets old.
