Game Overview

I picked up Smurfs for the Game Boy back in 1994, a side-scrolling platformer from Infogrames. It was one of those licensed games that felt common at the time, a colorful attempt to bring the little blue characters into the handheld space. You don't get a deep story, just the simple setup of rescuing Smurfette from Gargamel, which was enough to get you moving.

You control either Handy, Brainy, or Hefty Smurf, each with a unique ability like throwing hammers or jumping higher. The goal is straightforward: navigate left to right across each level, avoiding enemies like spiders and Gargamel's cat, Azrael. You jump on platforms, sometimes bounce on mushrooms, and collect berries for points. The levels are short but demand careful timing, especially with the constant threat of the cat reappearing. It feels like a brisk, sometimes frustrating, dash through a familiar cartoon world.
