Solid Runner came out in 1997 for the Super Nintendo, developed and published by ASCII Corporation. It was a late release for the system, arriving when many players had already moved on to newer consoles, so it flew under the radar for a lot of people.
You control a mech pilot navigating tight, multi-screen stages, shooting down enemy robots and dodging dense bullet patterns. Your main goal is to survive each area and defeat the large bosses that show up at the end. The game gives you a few key tools, like a chargeable main weapon and screen-clearing bombs, but you’re constantly managing your limited mobility against waves of projectiles. The pacing is fast and the difficulty is high, demanding quick reflexes and careful positioning. It feels tense and demanding, but fair once you learn the patterns.
