Spartan X (Japan) on Game Boy—or Kung-Fu Master if you grew up with the arcade version—is one of those games that feels way bigger than its tiny cartridge. You play as a martial artist (basically Jackie Chan in all but name) fighting through five floors of goons, dodging knives, and kicking dudes off balconies. The Game Boy’s black-and-green screen makes spotting some hazards a guessing game, but that just adds to the chaos.
It’s simple—punch, kick, jump—but the enemies come at you fast, and the boss fights still make me sweat. I love how portable it feels, like someone shrunk an arcade cabinet into something you can play between bus stops. The music’s got that classic bleep-bloop energy too. Not the deepest fighter, but sometimes you just want to dropkick a pixelated thug into oblivion.
Definitely a relic, but in the best way possible.
