Spartan X (J) came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991, published by Nintendo. It was part of that early wave of NES action games, a straightforward brawler adapted from the arcade scene. You control a martial artist, simply known as Thomas, who must fight his way through a multi-story pagoda to rescue his girlfriend, Sylvia, who has been kidnapped by the mysterious Mr. X.

You move Thomas screen by screen, punching and kicking a variety of enemies, from standard thugs to knife throwers and boomerang experts. The main objective is to clear each floor, defeat the sub-boss, and eventually face Mr. X himself. Signature mechanics include catching thrown projectiles, like knives, to throw them back, and battling enemies that respawn if you linger too long. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty is unforgiving, with limited continues. It feels like a tense, rapid-fire test of reflexes and pattern memorization from start to finish.
