I picked up SpongeBob SquarePants: The Yellow Avenger for the Nintendo DS back in 2005, a game published by THQ. It came out during that early DS period where licensed games were everywhere, trying to figure out how to use the dual screens and touch controls in a meaningful way. This one was part of that wave, a side-scrolling platformer that tried to capture the show's humor and energy without overcomplicating things.

You play as SpongeBob, of course, after he accidentally gets his hands on Mermaid Man's power belt. The main goal is to stop the evil Man Ray, which involves running through levels, smashing robots and jellyfish, and collecting golden spatulas. The touch screen is used for special moves, like summoning sea creatures to attack or creating whirlpools to clear obstacles. You explore areas screen by screen, from the Krusty Krab to Jellyfish Fields, bouncing on enemies and using a spin attack to break boxes. The pacing is fairly straightforward, not too hard for younger players, but some sections require timing to avoid hazards. It feels like a light, cartoonish adventure that doesn't take itself too seriously.
