Star Ocean: Blue Sphere came out for the Game Boy Color in 2001, developed by Enix. It was a direct sequel to Star Ocean: The Second Story, and one of the more ambitious RPGs on the handheld at the time, pushing the hardware with its colorful visuals and active combat system.
You control a party of characters, including Claude and Rena from the previous game, exploring a new planet screen by screen. The main goal involves investigating energy disruptions and surviving the hostile environment. Combat happens in real time on the same screen; you directly control one character while the AI handles the others, which can lead to chaotic but strategic fights. You gather items, solve environmental puzzles, and manage a large inventory. The pacing is brisk, and some boss encounters demand careful preparation.
