Star Ocean: Second Evolution came out on the PlayStation Portable in 2008, a remake of the original Star Ocean: Second Story from the PlayStation era. Developed by tri-Ace and published by Square Enix, it was part of a wave of polished JRPGs that found a comfortable home on the handheld. The game lets you choose between two protagonists, Claude or Rena, whose paths intersect on an underdeveloped planet. The story unfolds through detailed environments and character interactions that were enhanced for the portable release with new artwork and full voice acting.
You control a party of up to four characters, exploring towns and dungeons screen by screen, engaging in real-time combat against visible enemies on the map. Battles are frantic; you directly control one character while the AI handles the others, using special arts and spells that you can customize and combo. A major draw is the Private Action system, which lets you split from the party in towns to trigger unique, often humorous, story events that affect relationships and endings. The game encourages replay with its two main character perspectives, multiple endings, and a crafting system that lets you create powerful gear. It moves at a steady pace, though some dungeons can feel lengthy. Playing it feels like directing your own sci-fi adventure, full of small choices and explosive fights.
